The Ruk Baking company was born in March of 2020 during the initial onset of covid. Melissa was actively baking biscotti with her son William and sending them as gifts to relatives and friends. The biscotti were good but sweet and her friend Julienne told her about another twice baked treat from her childhood, the Rusk. Rusks are popular worldwide across Europe, Asia, and Africa and each culture has their own unique spin. Julienne and Melissa started baking rusks with their boys and they were quite the hit among coffee addicted Seattle families who found them a perfect pairing. Soon the fun family activity birthed the Ruk Baking Company and its line of related products. It turns out Ruks aren’t just great coffee dunkers but the recipe made great breads and crackers. Julienne and Melissa moved operations from their kitchens to a commercial bakery in Tacoma, WA and the Ruk empire was launched. Ruks is a family affair with Julienne and Melissa getting plenty of help from their boys (Melck, Rorke, Alex and William) and occasionally their husbands. The company's goal is to bring Rusk inspired baking creations to the United States so we can get to experience what the rest of the world already knows, Rusks are an addictively good, healthy, savory way to start or end your day.
At the RUK baking company we believe that old traditions have a place in our modern lives.
Rusks were a way to preserve bread or cake so that nothing was wasted, and the larder was always stocked with wholesome goodness.
Each culture has its own version - ours are made with an assortment of grains, seeds, and dried fruit. Farmers who had been working their fields from sun-up would take a break, dip the Rusks into steaming hot coffee or sweet Rooibos tea and refuel for the hours ahead.
We invite you to take a step back to when food made sense - it was of the land, for hardworking good people, who led full lives. RUK ON!
